Custom Zipper Lengths, Widths and Colors: Ordering Guide

If you design bags, covers, tents or outdoor gear, you have probably run into this problem: the standard zipper on the shelf is almost right, but not quite. A few centimeters too short, a tape that is too narrow for the seam, or a color that clashes with the fabric. That is where custom zippers come in. Ordering a zipper made to your exact specification is simpler than most buyers expect — and it usually costs less than redesigning your product around a stock size.

This guide explains how custom zipper lengths, widths, colors and hardware options work, and how to place an order that arrives exactly as specified.

Why Custom Zipper Lengths Matter

Length is the most common reason buyers go custom. A protective cover, a long gear bag or an oversized tent door needs a closure that matches the opening exactly. A zipper that is too short leaves a gap; one that is too long adds bulk, weight and cost. Cutting a stock zipper down is sometimes possible, but it often means reworking the end stops and slider, and the result rarely looks factory-finished.

Ordering the length you need from the start avoids all of that. The zipper arrives finished, with the correct ends, ready to weld into your product.

Custom Zipper Lengths: What Is Possible

Custom zipper lengths are available from 10 cm to 5000 cm. That range covers everything from small pocket closures to very long cover openings. In practice, the most commonly ordered standard lengths are 1 m, 2 m and 2.5 m, but any length in between can be produced to order.

Extra-long lengths of 3 m and above are available for oversized covers and long protective sleeves. If your product has an unusually long opening, it is worth asking rather than assuming it cannot be made. Long zippers need a little more care in handling and packing, but they are a routine part of custom production.

When you specify a length, measure the finished opening of your product and allow for the weld allowance your design requires. If you are unsure, send a drawing or a sample of the panel and the manufacturer can confirm the correct cut length.

Also allow for length tolerance. Zippers are produced to a tolerance, not to the exact millimeter. The industry reference is JIS S 3015:

Zipper length Length tolerance
Up to 30 cm ±5 mm
30–60 cm ±10 mm
60–120 cm ±15 mm
Over 120 cm ±2.0%

Our own production standard is generally tighter than JIS S 3015. If your design has a tight fit or a fixed weld length, state the tolerance you need when you order.

Getting the Width Right

Tape width is the second dimension buyers customize. The total width of the closed zipper determines how much fabric is available for attachment and how the closure sits on the finished product.

For our 8# TPU waterproof zipper, the usual total tape width is 36, 38 or 40 mm when closed. These widths give a good balance of attachment area and flexibility for heavy covers and bags. Other widths can be customized if your design needs a narrower or wider tape; samples of a custom width normally take about 5–7 days.

Width and strength are related. A narrower tape on a large, heavy zipper can put more stress on the fabric near the teeth, so if you are considering a non-standard width, it is worth discussing the application with the manufacturer first. A good supplier will tell you when a requested width could compromise durability and suggest a safer alternative.

Color: Black Standard, Custom Colors on Request

Black is the standard color for most waterproof and TPU zippers, and it suits the majority of outdoor and industrial products. If your product needs a different look — a brand color, a high-visibility shade, or a match to a specific fabric — custom colors can be produced on request.

When ordering a custom color, provide a fabric swatch or a color reference so the match can be checked before production. Color matching is easiest when the reference is a physical sample rather than a screen image, since screens shift color.

Sliders, Pullers and End Types

Hardware is the part of the zipper your customer actually touches, so it deserves the same attention as length and color.

  • Slider: The standard configuration for our 8# TPU waterproof zipper is a single, non-locking slider with a black flat puller and an oval hole. Metal or plastic sliders are available, and puller styles — including round or T-shaped pullers — can be selected to suit the product.
  • End type: The standard is an open end with a metal pin and square box, which allows the two sides of the zipper to separate completely. Other end configurations are available on request.
  • Top stop: The standard top stop is TPU-moulded, keeping the slider from running off the top of the chain.

If your product is used with gloves, or opened and closed frequently, mention it when ordering — the puller style and slider choice can make a real difference to usability.

TPU Film and Sealing Performance

For waterproof applications, the tape construction matters as much as the dimensions. Our 8# TPU waterproof zipper uses a polyester tape with TPU lamination on the slider side. The standard TPU film is 0.2 mm thick with 70A softness, giving a flexible, water-resistant and dust-resistant seal. An anti-UV TPU formulation is available for products that spend long periods outdoors.

It is important to choose the right sealing grade for the job. We produce three grades: water-resistant, watertight and airtight. The water-resistant grade described here is designed for rain, splashes and dust. For products exposed to standing water, a higher grade is the right choice — the airtight grade, for example, withstands approximately 30 kPa. Only the airtight grade carries an IPX7 rating, so do not accept an IPX7 claim on a water-resistant product.

How to Order Custom Zippers

Ordering a custom zipper follows a simple sequence:

  1. Send your specification. Size, length (and length tolerance, if tighter than JIS S 3015), tape width, color, slider and puller type, end type and quantity.
  2. Get samples. Samples are normally ready in 3 days (5–7 days if you need a custom tape width). Check them against your product before committing to bulk.
  3. Approve the sample. Confirm the dimensions, color, slider action and sealing performance.
  4. Bulk production. Production takes 7–10 days after sample approval and payment.

Small-batch custom orders are accepted — for example, 100 pieces of a non-standard length — so you do not need a huge order to get a zipper made to your specification.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring the wrong length. Measure the finished opening, not the fabric panel before hemming.
  • Sewing TPU tape. TPU tape must never be sewn: needle holes puncture the film and break the waterproof seal. Attach TPU zippers by hot welding (RF technology) instead.
  • Skipping the sample step. A sample costs little and catches dimension or color errors before they become a bulk problem.
  • Choosing a sealing grade by name alone. "Waterproof" is used loosely in the market. Confirm what the grade actually resists — rain and splashes, standing water, or air pressure — before you order.
Note: We specialize in airtight and waterproof zippers for diverse applications. A watertight zipper offers reliable water resistance for outdoor, marine, and daily protective applications. For projects requiring high-pressure sealing or gas isolation, airtight zippers remain the preferred solution. For custom solutions or technical specifications, please contact us.
